Saturday morning at the Kentucky Spring Classic saw junior hunter riders take center stage in the Stonelea Ring, competing in their respective divisions to earn points ahead of Sunday’s Junior Hunter Grand Champion crowning, presented by Visse Wedell. Competition kicked off with the Large Junior Hunter division led by Kaitlyn Lovingfoss followed by the Small Junior Hunters where Campbell Kahn and Josephine Rose currently sit tied at the top.
Currently leading the division, Rose and Kahn are tied after both capturing a first and third place ribbon in each class. Kahn and Mango, owned by Caroline Kahn, captured the division’s first over fences class. The 17-year-old Westphalian gelding followed with a third-place performance in the second class over fences where Rose rode Joey Rose LLC’s Cracker Jack to the victory. Together, Rose and the 12-year-old Warmblood gelding earned a third place ribbon in the first class.
Saylor Shea captured two second place ribbons aboard Strawberry Hill LLC’s Rookie, to follow close behind the two leading riders. Shea and the 11-year-old gelding are set in a good position to take the championship win on the final day of competition at the Kentucky Spring Classic.
Preceding the Small division was the Large Junior Hunters where Kaitlyn Lovingfoss topped the competition, to win both over fences rounds with Take the High Road LLC’s Style. The 10-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding has already earned Thursday’s Grand Hunter Champion title for his success in sweeping the Green Conformation Hunter division to earn a perfect score with Tim Goguen.
Junior Hunter competition will continue on Sunday with over fences, handy, and under saddle rounds that will dictate who will take home the grand champion title on the final day of the Kentucky Spring Classic. Competition is set to start at 8:00 a.m. in the Stonelea Ring beginning with the $5,000 USHJA National Derby, sponsored by the World Equestrian Center and Kentucky Horse Shows, after which the Large Junior Hunter division will follow.
